A final bipartisan agreement on three “Sewol laws” was reached on Oct. 31, the eve of 200 days since the ferry sinking that claimed over 300 lives in April.                  

Police again stand by as a million of propaganda leaflets launched into North Korea  

The head of the organization of North Korean refugees whose launch of balloons filled with propaganda leaflets instigated retaliatory fire from the North Korean military sent more balloons into North Korea from Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, early in the morning of Oct. 31. The police found out about the unannounced launch before it happened and dispatched officers to the scene, but they just stood by and watched.

Report: China-North Korea bridge opening postponed indefinitely

Chinese state media reported on Oct. 31 that the opening of the New Yalu River Bridge, which would link China and North Korea, has been postponed indefinitely.      

 “The New Yalu River Bridge had initially been scheduled to open on Oct. 30, but the opening has been delayed indefinitely,” China’s Global Times reported.               

“Hidden champion” exporter exposed as a huge fraud         

 Moneual was a fast-growing home appliance powerhouse, drawing the notice of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and winning “hidden champion” designation from Korea Exim Bank.           

 But new evidence suggests the company, headed by CEO Park Hong-seok, 52, actually fabricated 80% to 90% of its yearly sales, then used trade finance in a “rob Peter to pay Paul” strategy involving over 3.2 trillion won (US$3.0 billion) in export fraud.
