The Korea Post notice:

Why not encourage your Korean staffers to send us an essay in both Korean and English languages?

Many of the Korean secretaries and other staffers at the embassies have been there for a long time, some of them for decades.

As such, they are very well versed in the culture, customs and various other aspects of their employer country as well as the language. They are an invaluable human asset to the embassies.

Could there be a better media in bridging gaps between your esteemed country and Korea promoting goodwill between the two countries? They can bring your country and Korea a lot closer together to each other.

Encourage them to write an essay in Korean and English and email them to edt@koreapost.com to the attention of the Editor for free publication. The range of words is 1,000 with a portrait photo (or any other photo of their preference) to accompany the story.

The topic is free and optional as long as they contribute to the promotion of cooperation, exchange and friendship between your country and Korea.

The Korea Post, Media publisher of five media units in the Korean and English languages (including a Korean-English print weekly), will publish them in its (1) Korean-language Internet daily, (2) English-language Internet daily, (3) Korean Daily Media Headlines (summary) and (4) the main English print monthly--as well as (5) the Korean-English print weekly.

For further details, call the Editor at 2298-1740/2 or 010-5201-1740.

The Green Thing!

In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, coke bottles and beer bottles to the corner shop. They sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilised and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the corner shop and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two hundred yards into town. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have disposables. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new logoed clothing. But that old lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of London . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so that we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest Dominos Pizza.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smartass young person.

Remember: Don't make old People mad.

We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off.

Cold vs pneumonia

George had a miserable cold and went to see his doctor who prescribed some pills.

They didn’t help.

On his next visit the doctor gave him a shot, but that didn’t do any good either.

On his third visit the doctor told George to go home, take a hot bath, open the window and stand there naked and wet.

“But, Doctor,” George protested, “I’ll get pneumonia!”

“Pneumonia,” the doctor replied, “I can cure.”

"Did you sleep well? Does anything hurt?”

As soon as Baek Jeong-sook arrived at the basement-level apartment in Seoul’s Bangbae neighborhood on the morning of Mar. 4 she began inquiring about how Kim Hae-woon had been sleeping. Baek, who is 87, began pressing against the 89-year-old Kim’s wrists and ankles. “Is this okay?” Baek asked. Kim nodded, and Baek finally began to look around the house. She went around spraying water, and even cleaned the bathroom.

Mother of deceased Samsung worker, “This is like a nail in my heart”

Hello, my name is Kim Kyung-hee. I’m Cho Eun-ju’s mother.”

Kim Kyung-hee was among the attendees at an event on Mar. 4 for sharing first-hand experiences with occupational diseases at Samsung Electronics. The event was organized at the offices of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union in central Seoul to mark the eighth anniversary of the death of former Samsung Semiconductors worker Hwang Yu-mi.

I’m going to talk about my daughter, and it feels like a nail in my heart,” said Kim, who briefly seemed unable to continue.

As policies take effect, migratory trends leading away from the Seoul area

Net population movements have begun shifting away from the greater Seoul area as balanced regional development policies launched during the Roh Moo-hyun administration have started taking effect.

The Roh administration (2003-08) launched the policies, which included the building of a multipurpose administrative city at Sejong and numerous “innovation cities,” with the goal of achieving a net migration of 1.7 million people out of the greater Seoul area (the cities of Seoul and Incheon and surrounding Gyeonggi Province) between 2012 and 2030.

S. Korean winemakers struggle for their piece of the alcohol market

South Korean winemakers have a long, hard path to carve, not least because the domestic wine market itself is so small.

In 2013, the entire alcohol market in South Korea was worth 8.81 trillion won (US$8.02 billion), but fermented fruit beverages - a category that includes wine - only accounted for a paltry 125.5 billion won (US$114.17 million), or 1.4% of the total.

On Jan. 15, Seo Cheong-won, a member of the senior council of the Saenuri Party (NFP), and other lawmakers with the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union paid a visit to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Seo was there to convey a message from President Park Geun-hye, who wanted to “work together to improve relations between the two countries,” on the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan.

Parts of Kim Young-ran could be revoked even before the law takes effect

With the Korean Bar Association planning to ask the Constitutional Court to review the Kim Young-ran Act, some sections of the law may be in danger of being revoked before the law even takes effect.

The association is taking issue with two provisions in the law. First, the law states that members of the press are included in the category of “public servants” to whom the law applies. Second, the law makes it illegal to not report the fact that one’s spouse has received gifts in money or kind.

Asia After remarks by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman about historical issues in Northeast Asia provoked controversy, the US government moved swiftly to play down the remarks, claiming that her meaning had not been communicated properly.
