At Ansan Culture Plaza on May 1-3, 2015

Ansan City hosts International Street Drama Festival

The Ansan City, some 26 miles southwest of Seoul, hosts the 2015 Ansan International Street Drama Festival (AISDF) at the Ansan Culture Plaza on May 1-3, 2015 in a three-day run on the theme of ‘City in Action!’ which is also a slogan for the event.

A total of 61 works will be presented during the Festival, namely 48 from Korea and 13 from nine foreign countries.

The AISDF poses a substantial contrast with conventional street drama festivals in the fact that it attempts to produce new works created through a harmonious merger between the intrinsic artistic value of the street dramas and regional features of Ansan.

Among the 12 official entries are six Korean works and the remaining six entries from a number of different countries, namely France, Australia, the Netherlands and Portugal.

The Korean works consist of (1) AnNyeong (literally, “Hi!”) created by Creative Group NoNI, (2) Falling As I Lean Against the Wall, (3) Living The Good Life by Ambiguous Dance Company, (4) Pyro Art Work by HWARANG Art Pyrotechnics (5) ‘Donkey Shadow Trial’ by Art-Factory Comma And and (6) Tempest by THEATRE HADDANGSE. Among the six Korean works, the opening work is AnNyeong.

Among the foreign works, the opening entry is one from France named Envolee created by Aerosculpture Group. Others include the Megaphone Project by the Megaphone Project from Australia, The Poet on the Street from the Netherlands and the Remaining People from Portugal.

Ambassadors and Madams are invited to attend the opening ceremony on May 1, 2015. For our possible transmission failures, please call Tel 2298-1740/2, 010-5201-1740 or send an email to edt@koreapost.com or korpost@chol.com.

For further details, please visit /news/view.html?section=161&category=181&no=898.

Getting Refreshed

In a stressful American city a man stepped into an elevator on his way to the 15th floor.

As the door was shut, he discovered that all the indicator buttons were lit.

Furious at the prospect of stopping on every floor, he suddenly noticed, taped to the door, a piece of paper with a handwritten note:

“In the middle of the day full of pressure and haste, my gift to you is a fully justified break. So enjoy a few moments of total peace.”

He did just that as the elevator slowly made its way upward. When he got to his floor, he found himself amazingly refreshed.

Pres. Park deflects blame on corruption scandal after returning to Seoul

After returning from S. America, Park conveys hasty statement ahead of Apr. 29 by-elections

President Park Geun-hye broke her silence after a chaotic ten-day absence from South Korea, pledging to root out corruption that recently surfaced in a scandal that implicated high-ranking members of her government. Park made a statement on Apr. 28, shortly after returning from a four-country tour of Latin America. A spokesperson said that when Park returned she was suffering from ill health and might take some time off.

Amendment of guidelines means closer US-Japan military cooperation

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe explained in a Wall Street Journal interview on Apr. 27 what Japan’s expanded military role and tighter military coordination with the US would mean after a recent amendment of the two countries’ defense cooperation guidelines.“If there was an attack against the U.S. [Aegis] destroyer [near Japan], Japan would not be able to prevent that from happening under the current law,” Abe said in the interview. .

Sewol committee launches sit-in, giving Pres. Park until May 1

On Apr. 27, Lee Seok-tae, chair of the special committee set up to investigate the tragic sinking of the Sewol ferry, announced that the committee would stop working and start a sit-in at Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul. Lee wants President Park Geun-hye to address the issue of the enforcement decree for the special Sewol Law, which is infringing on the independence of the special committee. .

In Seoul, the UN of flophouses thrives

“We don’t have civil service exams in France. Needless to say, we don’t have flophouses for exam takers, either.” - Olivia Girade “We have studio apartments like this in Nigeria, but they’re much bigger.” - The rooms, 16-26 square meters in size, with an area for preparing simple meals and a small bathroom: basically the same as any other flophouse, with a monthly rent of 350,000 to 400,000 won (US$326-$373). .

Pres. Park back from overseas trip, with a mountain of crises awaiting her

After completing her tour of four countries in Latin America with a visit to Brazil, President Park Geun-hye departed from Sao Paulo, Brazil, early in the morning of Apr. 26 and arrived at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province on the morning of Apr. 27. While the Blue House asserts that Park achieved clear results on the 12-day trip - her longest since becoming president - the political situation at home during her absence was a chaotic series of crises. .

Expansion of Japan’s military role from regional to global

A little over a year and a half ago on Oct. 3, 2013, South Korean received some shocking news like a bolt from the blue. “We welcome Japan’s efforts, including its exercise of collective self-defense,” came the message. It was an open expression of support from the US for Japan’s new collective self-defense rights, with Washington declaring at a U.S.-Japan Security Consultative Committee (2 2) meeting that day that it would greatly bolster the US-Japan alliance’s capabilities in responding to a changing security environment in the Asia-Pacific region.” .

[Reporter’s notebook] US calling on S. Korea and Japan to “stitch up” historical disagreements

On the afternoon of Apr. 16, we were in the Dean Acheson Auditorium on the first floor of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The vice foreign ministers of South Korea, the US, and Japan had just completed a trilateral meeting and were holding a joint press conference. Perhaps because this was the first meeting that the vice foreign ministers of the three countries had held, there was nervousness in the air. When South Korean First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yong was speaking,
