Today’s humor:

Seoul Kyungje

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, and looked at the old pages as he turned them.

Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages.

"Momma, look what I found," the boy called out.

"What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked.

With astonishment in his voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's suit!"

After a drunken peak, makgeolli’s 3 year hangover

Five years ago, the makgeolli industry was drunk on itself. Today it lacks the energy it once had. The makgeolli boom began in 2009 and by 2011 production amounts, sales, and exports reached the highest points in history. After 2012, the makgeolli market began declining. Exports fell from 458,198kl in 2011 to 426,216kl in 2013, and sales decreased from around 509.7 billion won ($466.4 million) in 2011 to around 473.8 billion won ($433.1 million) in 2013, declines of 7%.

A Hankyoreh intern’s quest for the meaning Makgeolli

I’m a little drunk and very sunburned. The two older Korean men I’m sitting with on the concrete bank of a stream in east Seoul are tipsy. One shows me how he can dance on one foot, doing high kicks with the other. We’re on our third bottle of makgeolli. .

How to take makgeolli from farmer’s swill to upmarket craft brew

Around 2010, the makgeolli industry enjoyed unprecedented growth, but the traditional Korean rice beer still has a negative image. For many people, makgeolli is something that farmers or manual laborers drink, is cheap, leads to bloating and belching, induces vomiting, leaves a nasty hangover, smells bad, causes indigestion, and only shows up at university festivals and traditional events. Since 2009, the perception that makgeolli is a healthy alcoholic beverage .

With crowds of Chinese tourists, cosmetics are now the new face of Myeongdong.

If there is a “youke windfall” in Myeongdong these days, it’s news to Mr. Lee, the 50-year-old manager of a clothing shop in the busy Seoul neighborhood for the past 30 years. Some 100,000 Chinese tourists - known commonly by the Chinese word “youke” - visited South Korea over their country’s long Labour Day weekend. For many of them, Myeongdong was a must-see stop on their itinerary. .

South and North Korean civic groups agree to first June 15 joint commemorative event in eight years

Civic organizations from North and South Korea agreed to host a joint ceremony on the 15th anniversary of the June 15th North-South Joint Declaration in Seoul between June 14 and 16, the South Korean preparatory committee for the ceremony announced on May 8. This joint event could be the first since 2008. .

Poll: more South Koreans would prefer to keep pension payments as they are

A majority of South Koreans would rather keep the public pension at its current level than paying more in pension contributions, a public opinion survey shows. When Gallup Korea asked 807 people on May 6 and 7 about the bipartisan agreement about the national pension, 54% of respondents said that they would rather keep the national pension as its current level than paying more in premiums, .

Tokyo to deliberate with Seoul on designating industrial site as UNESCO World Heritage

The Japanese government indicated that it means to deliberate with South Korea on the question of registering former industrial facilities such as Hashima (also known as Battleship Island) - where Koreans once worked as forced laborers - as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. .

Nepalese who worked in South Korea helping to rebuild their native Nepal

Zone Five of Thulogaun, a village in north central Nepal, is home to an especially large number of people with the family name “Gurung.” The village had around 50 families living in it before it was leveled in the earthquake that rocked the country on Apr. 25. The stone-built houses crumbled, and 26 people lost their lives on the day of the disaster - including one newborn baby.
