Down on their luck, more homeless foreigners found on the streets of Seoul

Government now taking steps to assess the number of homeless non-Koreans, and provide support

It was the evening of Apr. 22, near exit 2 of Seoul Station. A homeless person who was idly sitting on a flowerbed near the exit swigged the dregs of a bottle of makgeolli (Korean rice beer) left there by other homeless people. A few hours later, the dead body of this homeless person was discovered. In his pocket was a passport from Kazakhstan and a mobile phone that only showed he had received calls from overseas.

Wars of words escalating between South and North Korean leaders

South and North are ratcheting up their potshots against each other’s leaders. The escalating rhetoric could spell trouble for planned joint events to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration and the 70th anniversary of Korean independence. From the South, President Park Geun-hye herself took center stage on May 19. Speaking in a celebratory address at the Asian Leadership Conference in Seoul, Park declared that North Korea “has recently raised military tensions with its test launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), .

“We want our footsteps to be a comfort to the people who have long suffered under division on the Korean Peninsula, and to open up the possibility of a brighter future toward unification.”Around 30 prominent women’s rights and peace advocates from 15 countries left Beijing for Pyongyang on May 19 for the Women Cross DMZ Peace Walk event. Their five-day visit will see them staging symposiums and recitals in North Korea on “women and peacemaking” and visiting children’s hospitals. On May 24, they are scheduled to walk across the DMZ and arrive in South Korea at Panmunjeom. .

Kyodo: North Korea could be preparing satellite launch for October

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gave orders to prepare for a satellite launch on Oct. 10, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Workers‘ Party, a Japanese wire service reported. Quoting intelligence officials from the governments of “multiple countries,” Japan’s Kyodo News reported on May 18 that Kim Jong-un had personally instructed North Korea’s National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) at the beginning of this year to prepare for a satellite launch. .

S. Korean gov't trying to gag the social artists that insist on satirizing

Hong Seung-hee, 25, is a “social artist.” She draws artistic inspiration from social issues and works not in the traditional gallery environment, but in open spaces. Over the past year, her social art has earned her some seven million won (US$6,420) in fines. The real issue was the content of her work, but the actual punishments were for contrived reasons such as “road obstruction.” So why the ruses? .

North Korea heaps harsh words on Pres. Park for “silly sleepwalker’s dreams”

Pyongyang is ramping up its criticisms of President Park Geun-hye for her allegations that North Korean Minister of the People’s Armed Forces Hyon Yong-chol was purged. The development casts renewed doubts on expectations of a thaw in inter-Korean relations amid increasingly unclear prospects of joint events for the 15th anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration of 2000. .

Kaesong companies pass resolution opposing North’s unilateral wage raise

Kaesong Industrial Complex tenant companies reached an agreement not to accept North Korea’s unilateral demands to increase wages. Instead, they agreed to provide the North Korean authorities with a letter of guarantee to pay the difference in the wages once North and South Korean negotiators reach an agreement. .
