US Forces Korea (USFK) tried to restore calm by claiming that the anthrax experiment connected with the accidental delivery of live anthrax was taking place “for the first time.” But with evidence surfacing that US forces have been operating an anthrax laboratory in South Korea for more than 17 years, there is criticism that the US was trying to sweep the incident under the rug.
Case of live anthrax on US military base raises questions of revising Status of Forces Agreement
After live anthrax was mistakenly delivered to the Osan Air Force Base, which is operated by US Forces Korea (USFK), there is increasing pressure to revise the US-South Korea Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which currently allows the US to bring hazardous materials into South Korea without notifying the South Korean government. .
S. Korea, US and Japan to hold trilateral defense talks at Shangri-La Dialogue

Three incidents of fires and smoke at Kori Nuclear Power Plant in Busan over the past seven months are stirring up longstanding fears over nuclear power. The latest episode occurred at around 7:54 pm on May 28, when 25 fire trucks from the Busan Metropolitan City Fire Safety Headquarters were sent in after smoke was discovered in the third-floor air compressor room in the turbine building for Reactor 2.The trucks immediately returned to their base after the smoke was found to have been controlled by the plant’s own firefighting personnel, who had been first to discover it. .

Study: S. Korean kids learning too much math too early
Elementary and middle school students in South Korea have to learn more math in less time than their counterparts in Europe, the US, and Japan, a study found. In addition, South Korean students are generally taught the same content at an earlier age than student in those other countries. The study identifies this as the fundamental reason that math education degenerates into rote memorization and problem solving, even though conceptual understanding is a crucial part of the subject. The study is likely to give momentum to the argument that a major reduction of math education in elementary, middle, and high school is necessary in order to decrease the number of students who give up on math altogether.
