The Korea Post notices:

Surasang (Royal table-setting):

The Korean kings had five meals a day, namely the early morning gruel, breakfast, lunch, supper and the late-night snack, and each regular meal had a total of 12 bowls and dishes of foods, which increased to over 30 and even 40 on festive occasions.

In contrast, the peasants ran out food in spring and had to live on Chogeun Mokpi (草根木皮), literally meaning “grass roots and tree barks.” Hence the common Korean expression, Bori Gogae (‘Barley Pass’) meaning ‘starvation pass’ normally falling in May when the farmers have run out of the harvested grain of the previous year and yet the barley is not yet ready for harvest.

Proudly introduce the traditional foods of your country:

I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that The Korea Post is publishing a Special Report in all its five media units (two in Korean and three in English) to introduce the regular food table of each country.
This is in preparation for the Grand Exhibition of Food Tables of the World to be shown to over half a million people expected to visit the 2015 Namyangju Slow Life Planet Festival on October 8-17, 2015.

Please email to edt@koreapost.com a copy of the regular Food Table of your country for publication in The Korea Post and also at the Exhibition Center of the 2015 Namyangju Festival for a duration of 10 days.

In Korea, the table normally consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of guk (watery soup), a bowl of Jjigae (stew), a dish of roast fish, a dish of Namul (seasonal greens) and a number of other dishes (small pancakes, steamed eggs, fried bean curds, jelly, etc.). The number of bowls and dishes differ depending on the financial status of the family and on the different occasions. On such festive occasions as Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok (Autumn Full Moon Festival), the number of foods and variety are much larger than at normal time, and each has a specific food item that must not be left out, eg., Ddeokguk (rice cake soup) on the New Year’s Day and Songpyeon (stuffed small rice cake in a half-moon shape. (Please call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

Send your news releases:

Send the Embassy news releases to edt@koreapost.com for publication by all its five media units, including one Korean (www.koreapost.co.kr) and one English (www.koreaposst.com) Internet dailies, which are updated real-time. (Call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

Today’s humor:

Hankuk Kyungje

Queen's Wish

It was the wedding night of the king and queen. After a big session the queen cuddled up and whispered, “Do the common people do this too?”

The king said, “Yes, dear.” The queen deeply deplored the fact and implored the king, “They shouldn’t be allowed to do it… it’s too good for them!”

[News analysis] S. Korea seeking a mature foreign policy for relations with Japan

With the leaders of South Korea and Japan attending parallel ceremonies and South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se making his first visit to Japan, the two countries seem poised to capture momentum created by the 50th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral diplomatic ties and improve bilateral relations. Experts say that, in order to ensure sustainable improvement of its relations with Japan, South Korea will need to lead the way toward a long-term, strategic position instead of overreacting each time that Japan takes provocative action about historical issues. In other words,

N. Korea sentences two S. Koreans to life in prison

North Korea sentenced Kim Guk-gi, 61, and Choi Chun-gil, 56, two South Korean citizens that it had detained, to life in prison. “Kim Guk-gi and Choi Chun-gil, spies and agents for the puppet regime who were apprehended while plotting and spying against the Republic under the control of the Americans and their puppet regime in South Korea, were tried in the Supreme Court and sentenced to life in prison,” the Korean Central Television (KCTV), North Korea’s state news broadcaster, said on June 23. .

Human rights commission sides with police who impeded Sewol fasting and meetings

Priests and nuns with the Catholic Priests‘ Association for Justice (CPAJ) held daily fasting and prayer meetings last August calling for an investigation and special law on that April’s Sewol ferry sinking, which claimed over 300 lives. After the meetings ended, they would walk 1.5 km to Seochon Gallery to look at work by one of the victims, a Danwon High School student and aspiring designer named Park Ye-seul. .

Hospice coverage in Hankyoreh leads to outpouring of donations

The news about financial difficulties at Mitgehen (meaning “going together”), a hospice organization that offers terminal care to South Koreans who went to Germany to work as nurses and miners, has brought help from all directions. On June 23, Ven. Jino told the Hankyoreh in an email that he would be donating 5 million won (US$4,500) to the charity. Ven. Jino, known as “the running monk,” is the president of a group called People Who Achieve Their Dreams. .

[News analysis] From their lowest nadir, Seoul-Tokyo relations could be at a turning point

After reaching their lowest point ever under the administration of President Park Geun-hye, relations between South Korea and Japan may be at a turning point on the 50th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral diplomatic relations. The question now is whether South Korea and Japan can overcome the disagreements and disputes over historical issues and reach the summit of a normalized relationship, represented by holding a summit between their leaders, before the year is out. .

North Korea cancels plans to participate in Gwangju Universiade

North Korea announced that it will not be attending the summer Universiade, scheduled to take place in Gwangju between July 3 and 14, because the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is setting up a field office in Seoul. The announcement throws a wrench in the plans of the South Korean government to treat North Korea’s participation in the sports event as an opportunity to resume inter-Korean exchange. .

Foreign travelers to get automatic MERS insurance from S. Korean government

Foreign visitors to South Korea will receive automatic Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) insurance enrollment for the next three months. The Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA) announced on June 22 that it was enrolling that day in MERS compensation insurance for foreign travelers with support from the South Korean government. But the measure is expected to draw continued criticism, with some charging that the country is focusing too much on tourist visits.
