The Korea Post notices:

Proudly introduce the traditional foods of your country:

I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that The Korea Post is publishing a Special Report in all its five media units (two in Korean and three in English) to introduce the regular food table of each country.

This is in preparation for the Grand Exhibition of Food Tables of the World to be shown to over half a million people expected to visit the 2015 Namyangju Slow Life Planet Festival on October 8-17, 2015.

Please email to edt@koreapost.com a copy of the regular Food Table of your country for publication in The Korea Post and also at the Exhibition Center of the 2015 Namyangju Festival for a duration of 10 days.

In Korea, the table normally consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of guk (watery soup), a bowl of Jjigae (stew), a dish of roast fish, a dish of Namul (seasonal greens) and a number of other dishes (small pancakes, steamed eggs, fried bean curds, jelly, etc.). The number of bowls and dishes differ depending on the financial status of the family and on the different occasions. On such festive occasions as Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok (Autumn Full Moon Festival), the number of foods and variety are much larger than at normal time, and each has a specific food item that must not be left out, eg., Ddeokguk (rice cake soup) on the New Year’s Day and Songpyeon (stuffed small rice cake in a half-moon shape. (Please call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

Send your news releases and feedback:

Send the Embassy news releases to edt@koreapost.com for publication by all its five media units, including one Korean (www.koreapost.co.kr) and one English (www.koreaposst.com) Internet dailies, which are updated real-time. (Call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

Today’s humor:

Seoul Kyungje

A man, trying very hard to understand the nature of God, asks Him, "God, how long is a million years to you?"

"A million years is like a minute," God replies.

The man then asks, "God, how much is a million dollars to you?"

"A million dollars is like a penny," God replies.

After thinking for a moment, the man asks, "God, could you give me a penny?"

"In a minute!" replies God.

Hankuk Kyungje

Celibacy

At dinner, the woman mentioned a magazine article she’d read in which a Hollywood actor complained about having to remain celibate for months shooting in a remote location.

Her ten-year-old son asked what “celibate” meant, and his parents explained as best they could.

After thinking for a few minutes, he said, “I don’t know what’s so difficult about that. I’ve been celibate for ten years!”

Study: women still spent four times longer on housework than men

Also, more women than men getting university education, but far fewer women getting employed

While the equality of the sexes is taken for granted today, a study found that women spend more than four times as much time on housework as men do in South Korea. In addition, only one man takes parental leave for every 21 women. According to Viewing Women’s Lives Through Statistics 2015, released by Statistics Korea and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on June 2, the average time each day that women over the age of 10 spent doing housework in 2014 was 3 hours and 5 minutes,

International body says S. Korea’s climate policy is “inadequate”

Climate Action Tracker (CAT), a Europe-based organization that assesses and analyzes climate policy, rated the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) that the South Korean government submitted to the UN on as June 30 as being “inadequate.” This is the lowest grade on a four-point scale that includes “role model,” “sufficient,” “medium,” and “inadequate.” .

Daegu becoming a hub for graffiti satirizing Pres. Park

Since the end of last year, graffiti satirizing President Park Geun-hye has been appearing in Daegu. No one drew graffiti lampooning the president during the administrations of former presidents Roh Moo-hyun (2003-2008) and Lee Myung-bak (2008-2013), but this kind of graffiti keeps showing up in Daegu, where President Park has a strong support base. The first time that satirical graffiti appeared in Daegu was on Nov. 6 of last year. .

Samsung Medical Centre fumbles efforts to shake reputation as MERS epicenter

On June 23, Lee Jae-yong held a press conference about the South Korean outbreak of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). Along with being the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, Lee is the chair of the board of directors for the Samsung Life Public Welfare Foundation, which operates the Samsung Medical Center. “Samsung Medical Center has caused the Korean people to suffer great pain and anxiety, and I would like to offer my sincere apology,” .

[Special report] Amid ban, a quasi-legal boom in whale meat and culture

Roy Chapman Andrews (1884-1960), the US archeologist and adventurer who reportedly served as the model for Indiana Jones, visited the port of Jangsaengpo, Ulsan, to observe whales during the Japanese occupation year of 1912. It was through his academic reports that the world first came to know of the Korean gray whale. The animal, which has a Korean name gwisin gorae that translates as “ghost whale,” disappeared like a ghost from Korean waters around 1977. Today, only the name “Gray Whale Migration Site” (Natural Monument No. 126) remains as a sign where it once was found. .

Defense Ministry seeking another delay to cutting number of military troops

The Ministry of National Defense is pushing for an amendment to move its target date for troop reductions back from 2022 to 2030.The move has many questioning if the military is attempting to roll back reforms out of concerns that reductions in officer and other high-ranking personnel may damage its vested interests. .

Chaebol families dominate, but own only small portions of their groups

Chaebol families own just 4.3% of shares in their groups’ companies, a recent study finds. The number is up 0.1 percentage points from 2014, but continues to show that gap between ownership and control, with “clans” dominating the groups while possessing only small equity in them. .

Falling oil prices plaguing exports, South Korea’s growth engine

For decades, exports have been called the growth engine of South Korea‘s economy. While they did experience sharp drops with the effects of the 1997 foreign exchange crisis and the 2009 global financial crisis, they consistently performed strongly through 2011.After that, though, they began losing steam. Following growth of just 2.1% in 2013 and 2.3% in 2014, exports were down 5% from the year before for the first quarter, fanning concerns that the area’s energy may depleting. .

In MERS outbreak, WHO took the reins from South Korea

“When the WHO suggested setting up a joint assessment team with South Korea, it was effectively announcing that it would be surveying South Korea. Even after concerns that MERS might spread to other countries after South Korea failed to stop the disease in the early stages, the government wasn’t providing enough information, so the WHO indirectly said it would look into the situation itself,” said Lee Jong-gu on July 1.
