The Korea Post news:

Yoo now close contestant to Kim Moo-sung as Saenuri Presidential hopeful

Yoo Seung-min, who involuntarily resigned yesterday as the floor leader of the ruling Saenuri Party under the pressure of the pro-Park faction of the party, jumped to the second place overnight in the popularity rating of the Presidential hopefuls of the ruling camp, next only to Saenuri Chairman Kim Moo-sung.

According to a survey conducted by Real Meter at the request of JTBC TV on July 8, 2015, Yoo scored 16.8% of support only after Kim Moo-sung who got 19.1%--merely 2.3% difference.

Yoo by far (more than three times) outstripped former Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo (6%), former Saenuri Chairman Chung Mong-soon (5.1%), Jeju Special Province Governor Won Hee-ryong (3.1%), incumbent Gyeonggi Governor Nam Kyung-pil (2.5%) and Gyeongsangnam-do Province Governor Hong Joon-pyo (2.3%).

Yoo's 'super high jump' is more than 3 times the score (5.4%) he got on June 25, 2015 when President Park Geun-hye severely rebuked him literally as a 'political traitor.'

Leaving the post of the Saenu Party floor leader, Yoo said, "I have been trying to keep the post to safeguard the solemn values of the Clause 1 of the Article 1 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Korea, which states: "The Republic of Korea is a democratic republic."

The Korea Post notices:

Proudly introduce the traditional foods of your country:

I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that The Korea Post is publishing a Special Report in all its five media units (two in Korean and three in English) to introduce the regular food table of each country.

This is in preparation for the Grand Exhibition of Food Tables of the World to be shown to over half a million people expected to visit the 2015 Namyangju Slow Life Planet Festival on October 8-17, 2015.

Please email to edt@koreapost.com a copy of the regular Food Table of your country for publication in The Korea Post and also at the Exhibition Center of the 2015 Namyangju Festival for a duration of 10 days.

In Korea, the table normally consists of a bowl of rice, a bowl of guk (watery soup), a bowl of Jjigae (stew), a dish of roast fish, a dish of Namul (seasonal greens) and a number of other dishes (small pancakes, steamed eggs, fried bean curds, jelly, etc.). The number of bowls and dishes differ depending on the financial status of the family and on the different occasions. On such festive occasions as Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok (Autumn Full Moon Festival), the number of foods and variety are much larger than at normal time, and each has a specific food item that must not be left out, eg., Ddeokguk (rice cake soup) on the New Year’s Day and Songpyeon (stuffed small rice cake in a half-moon shape. (Please call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

Send your news releases and feedback:

Send the Embassy news releases to edt@koreapost.com for publication by all its five media units, including one Korean (www.koreapost.co.kr) and one English (www.koreaposst.com) Internet dailies, which are updated real-time. (Call 010-5201-1740 for further details.)

A New Car

A man purchased a new car. He was on his way home and all his attention was on the new vehicle. Then it occurred to him that he had forgotten something.

Twice he stopped, checked his parcels and searched his pockets. Finally he decided he had everything with him.

When he arrived home his young son came out and asked, “Daddy, where is Mommy?”

Public health body seeking stronger control measures after unauthorized shipment of anthrax came into South Korea

The Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), affiliated with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, stated that Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) should be revised to require the US military to notify South Korea’s health authorities before bringing anthrax and other dangerous pathogens into the country, the Hankyoreh confirmed on July 7.

Pres. Park offloading her education pledge on local governments

Some of President Park Geun-hye’s signature education and welfare pledges - including free high school education and daycare for elementary school students - are in danger of coming to nothing after the government delegated them to local education offices without a source of funding. Even next year, the fourth year of Park’s presidency, there is little chance that money from the budget will be allocated for these projects. .

Basic pension a success, but elderly poverty still a serious problem

One year after the basic pension program was launched, recipients are highly satisfied with the program, a survey found. This illustrates just how important a role basic pension plays in welfare for the elderly. However, experts believe that reform is needed in a wide range of areas before real progress can be made in resolving elderly poverty. Basic pension provides a minimum of 100,000 won (US$88) and a maximum of 200,000 won (US$176) to people 65 years and above who fall within the lowest 70% of income earners. .

With Lee Hee-ho - widow of former president Kim Dae-jung (in office 1998-2003) and chair of the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center - receiving clearance to visit North Korea from August 5 to 8, there is growing interest in why the North approved her visit and how it will affect inter-Korean relations. .

S. Korea and Japan debate comments about being “forced to work”

No sooner did the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) agree to add Japanese forced labor facilities to its list of cultural heritages on July 5 than South Korea and Japan began squabbling over how to interpret comments about being “forced to work.” In both countries, people are criticizing the agreement as a diplomatic defeat. .

Same sex couple taking push for marriage to the courts

“This is a hugely important day for my husband and I, as well as for all LGBT people in South Korea. We will do our best to make the constitutional principle that all citizens are equal before the law to shine in the court.”On the afternoon of July 6, same sex couple Kim Jho Gwang-soo, 50, and Kim Seung-hwan, 31, held hands as they entered Seoul Western District Court. The court will be ruling on the first marriage papers submitted by a same-sex couple in South Korea. .

US missile industry running into limits, seeking overseas buyers

Various reports confirm a growing sense not only among the leaders of the US’s army and navy but also in the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) that the country’s current strategy for missile defense is running into limitations. Not only are sharp cuts in the defense budgets making it hard for the US military to cover the massive cost of developing and acquiring these weapons systems, but there are unanswered questions about their reliability.
