The Korea Post notices:

There are only three days left to the Gyeongju Silk Road Culture Festival (a one-night-two-day tour) on 21-22 August 2015.

Cloudy skies and scattered rain are forecast for the beginning day with a high of 27 degrees and a low of 23 degrees. The Festival will take place rai or shine.

HYANGDAN HOUSE IN YANGDONG FOLK VILLAGE IN GYEONGJU?One of the biggest traditional Korean tile-roofed houses of the nobility in the Joseon Dynasty. It is located at the entrance of the Yangdong Folk Village in Gyeongju City. Hyangdan was built in 1543 and was designated as the 412th Treasure on Nov. 14, 1964. Hyangdan was the house of Governor Yi Eon-jeok of the Gyeongsang Province during the Joseon Dynasty. Yi had the house built for his younger brother, Yi Eon-jeok, who looked after his ageing mother in his place because he could devote himself to serving the King. Hyangdan, therefore, stands for good brotherly relations, filial piety for parents and loyalty to the king. Yangdong Village was designated as the 189th Important Folk Relic on Dec. 20, 1984 as an upper class community. Hyangdan is one of the main tourist destinations for the ambassadors and spouses during their visit to Gyeongju on the occasion of the Gyeongju Silk Road Expo on Friday 21, August 2015.

Invitation to Gyeongju Silk Road Culture Expo

I am pleased to inform Your Excellency that Governor Kim Kwan-yong and Mayor Choi Yang-sik of Gyeongju City cordially invite Your Excellency and Madam to a one-night-two-day tour and to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Gyeongju Silk Road Culture Expo on Friday 21 August 2015, which includes a drama on the noted ‘Korean Buddhist Monk Hyecho’s Pilgrimage and Tour of India and the Middle East’ in the 8th Century and a tour of the Gyeongju Museum and Yangdong Korean Folk Village. Now preserved at the Paris National Museum in France, the rare hand-written book by Ven. Hyecho features various strange customs of living, which include ‘Men and women living stark-naked,’ ‘Tribal community where the brothers share one woman,’ ‘Cooking rice in a clay pot’ and ‘Tribes having no sauce but only salt.’

Earlier in May this year, over 60 ambassadors and other senior diplomats attended the prelude event ‘Gyeongju Student Silk Road Festival’ when the drama featured the “Love Story of Silla Princess and Iranian Prince.’ The Main Gyeongsu Silk Road Culture Expo (unlike the prelude student event) has many interesting programs extremely attractive to the Ambassadors and Madams.

As in the case of the previous (student) festival, deluxe KTX Train will be used between Seoul and Gyeongju.

A formal letter of Invitation will be faxed and emailed to Your Excellency today.

Just in case of our possible transmission failure, our contact phone numbers are:

Regular phones: 2298-1745/6, 2298-1740/2

Mobile phones: Ms. Kim at 010-3388-1682 (Korean), David Chung at 010-3481-1101 (English) or Chairman Lee at 010-5201-1740.

70 years after liberation, it’s time to really show our mettle

Today marks seventy years since Korea’s liberation. We take this opportunity to look back on the powerful feelings and desires that we experienced when we passed through that deep darkness and the light finally returned. The landscape has changed vastly - over 90% of South Koreans alive today were born after that day. It is time now for us to look ahead to the first century after liberation, to say goodbye to the past seventy years and prepare ourselves for the next thirty.

[News analysis] Abe’s statement amounts to a tenuous compromise

The statement made by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Aug. 14, one day before the 70th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II and Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial occupation - can be seen as a tenuous compromise between Abe’s personal convictions, which are slanted toward historical revisionism, and diplomatic reality, which forces him to take into account relations with neighboring countries. .

N. Korea breaks silence, calls mine planting allegations a “slanderous concoction”

North Korea finally responded on Aug. 13 to the South Korean military’s announcement blaming it for a mine blast early this month at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), calling the accusation a “slanderous concoction.” It was Pyongyang’s first response since the explosion occurred on Aug. 4, coming ten days after the incident itself and four days after the official announcement by the South Korean military. .

[Correspondent’s column] Caught between China and the US, S. Korea can’t assume a rosy future

In the winter of 2011, I visited the US for three weeks. I traveled through Washington, D.C., the South, the Midwest, and the West, finally reaching Hawaii. There is one scene that I remember clearly even now. In a conversation with three or four experts, the most senior member of the group asked me what I thought about the withdrawal of US forces from South Korea. .

Going back on another election pledge, Pres. Park pardons corporate heavyweights

President Park Geun-hye granted special Liberation Day pardons to 6,527 people on Aug. 13.The list of recipients included fourteen business figures, including SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won, as well as many small business owners and people convicted of financial crimes. .

Early announcement - Pres. Park to visit US in Oct. for summit with Obama

The Blue House announced on Aug. 14 that South Korean President Park Geun-hye will be visiting the US on Oct. 16 to have a summit with US President Barack Obama. “During the meeting, the two leaders will share their views about a variety of issues of mutual interest, including strengthening the alliance between the US and South Korea, cooperating on the North Korean nuclear program and other issues involving North Korea, working together for the peace, .
