[Analysis] Pres. Park kicking off a new diplomatic campaign around China

Park apparently hoping attendance at Sep. 3 military parade can bolster relations with Beijing, and reap inter-Korean benefits

As South Korean President Park Geun-hye enters the second half of her term in office, she is kicking off a new diplomatic campaign by heading to China on Sep. 2 for a three-day visit. Since Park is the only leader of a country allied with the US that has decided to attend China‘s military parade, South Korea’s relationship with China could develop rapidly and that the two countries could work together more closely on finding a solution to the North Korean nuclear issue.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to attend WWII commemoration in Beijing

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced plans to attend a Sept. 3 event in Beijing to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of victory in China’s war against Japan and fascism. The decision comes amid objections from Tokyo over the appropriateness of his attendance. .

Working level talks for family reunions raise chances for inter-Korean d?tente

An agreement to hold working-level Red Cross talks at Panmunjeom on Sept. 7 for divided family reunions is raising hopes for possible thawing of inter-Korean relations. But the Blue House, while welcoming of the “forward-thinking” stance from Pyongyang, continues to voice a cautious standpoint as it focuses on figuring out the reason for the North’s sudden shift in attitude from military tensions. .

With Chinese economy stumbling, S. Korea could be about to “triple dip”

After bottoming out twice during the global financial crisis and the European fiscal crisis, the South Korean economy could be headed for a “triple dip downturn” because of recent developments in China, analysts suggest. There are also concerns that half of South Korean exports could be affected by the Chinese downturn. .

Survey: Young S. Koreans turn to quality of life over economic achievement

Solidarity and cooperation over competition and self-sufficiency. Quality of life over economic achievement. State responsibility over individual responsibility in matters of risk. These were the values identified in an early August surveys of attitudes among 1,500 South Koreans aged 19 to 34 by the Hankyoreh Economy and Society Research Institute. The findings calculated them in terms of “value units,” quantifications of young people’s desired value orientation for South Korean society in five major areas .

Pres. Park’s approval rating up to nearly 50% after inter-Korean agreement

Following the high-level talks between South and North Korea on Aug. 25, President Park Geun-hye’s approval rating jumped to nearly 50%, a poll shows. On Aug. 28, Gallup Korea announced that 49% of the 1,004 adults from around South Korea that it surveyed between Aug. 25 and Aug. 27 thought positively of Park’s job performance. This was a 15 percentage point jump from just one week ago, when Park’s approval rating was 34%, and it is the highest number since the third week of April 2014 (59%), just before the sinking of the Sewol ferry.
