S. Korea and Japan allude to possible progress on comfort women issue

But lack of concrete plans for a mutually satisfactory resolution cast doubt on prospects for real progress

On Nov. 2, President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe instructed diplomats from both countries to accelerate negotiations to resolve the issue of the so-called comfort women as soon as possible. By emphasizing the fact that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Japan and South Korea normalizing diplomatic relations, the two leaders hinted that progress could be reached on the comfort women issue by the end of the year.

At summit, Abe says all the key points were raised

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reported that he had “made every point that Japan ought to make” during the summit with President Park Geun-hye on Nov. 2. He appears to have put a great deal of pressure on Park, raising most of the sensitive topics, including not only the comfort women but also the South China Sea and the indictment of the former Seoul bureau chief of the Sankei Shimbun newspaper. .

At summit, S. Korea and Japan agree to step up regional economic cooperation

South Korea and Japan agreed to play leading roles in East Asian economic integration with a trilateral free trade agreement with China and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).Plans for possible Japanese collaboration are also to be discussed if South Korea decides to join the US- and Japan-led Trans-Pacific Partnership, which an agreement was reached on last month. .

Instead of unifying, history textbooks further dividing S. Korean society

In a National Assembly address on Oct. 27, President Park Geun-hye said, “I will use correct history textbooks to unify the divide in public opinion.” Over the past 20 days since the government‘s announcement of plans to take over the authorship of Korean history textbooks, South Korean society has coalesced around opposition to the plan, not around support of it, as President Park had hoped. .

S. Korea, China and Japan hold first trilateral summit since 2012

South Korea, China and Japan stated that they “oppose any action that may cause tension on the Korean Peninsula or violate relevant UN Security Council resolutions.” In addition, they promised to work together to improve bilateral relations and to foster trilateral cooperation “in the spirit of facing history squarely and advancing towards the future.”
