State-issued textbooks looking set to be a hasty, secretive process

The government hasn’t made public the principal authors, and will struggle to stick to schedule

The National Institute of Korean History has initiated work on compiling state-issued history textbooks, but it has only made public two of the six principal authors, who could be called the “face” of the textbooks. With the institute unable to even provide the names of the main writers, there are concerns about whether it will be able to assemble the complete team of 40 or so writers on schedule. There is a risk that, in the end, a team of biased writers will be hastily cobbled together.

Questions over the guidelines for state-issued history textbooks

With the National Institute of Korean History promising to release the compilation guidelines for state-issued Korean history textbooks by the end of this month, which will make up the core of the textbooks, there is increasing interest about what those guidelines will be. .

At resumed Itaewon murder trial, both suspects still pointing at the other

Edward Lee, 36, returned to South Korean court as a witness this week, eighteen years after he was found not guilty of a 1997 stabbing at a Burger King in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood. .

PM’s claims about “pro-North Korea” textbooks fall flat

During a joint government briefing on Nov. 3 about plans to take control over the authorship of history textbooks, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn said that “99.9% of schools selected textbooks that are alleged to be biased.” Hwang made an ideological attack reminiscent of McCarthyism, depicting all seven textbooks aside from the one produced by the Kyohak company as being left-leaning. .

Opposition party calls state-issued textbooks an affront to liberal democracy

Following the government’s official announcement on Nov. 3 of a plan to take over the authorship of Korean history textbooks, Moon Jae-in, leader of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD), denounced the move as being out of step with liberal democracy, saying, “State-issued history textbooks are the enemy of liberal democracy. The people who are calling for the government to resume control of history textbooks are not liberal democrats.”
