U.S. President Barack Obama imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea on Wednesday, further tightening the screws on Pyongyang for its nuclear and missile tests, including the blacklisting of anyone assisting the North over its labor and mineral exports.

N. Korea warns of preemptive attack against S. Korea

North Korea said Wednesday its military will launch a preemptive attack if it sees any signs that the South Korean and U.S. troops involved in annual joint military drills are attempting to invade the North.

Since UN sanctions against North Korea kicked in, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has taken steps almost daily to demonstrate the North‘s nuclear ability. North Korean media reported the test launch of a large-caliber rocket launcher on Mar. 4, the development of a ballistic rocket and a miniaturized and standardized nuclear warhead on Mar. 9, the test launch of a ballistic rocket on Mar. 11 and the acquisition of technology for nuclear warheads reentering the atmosphere on Mar. 15.

Pres. Park says nukes will lead to North Korea’s “self-destruction”

President Park Geun-hye said on Mar. 15 that North Korea was “walking the path of self-destruction” if it does not change its pattern of “continued irrational provocations and strong hostility toward the international community.”While presiding over a Cabinet meeting at the Blue House that day, Park said Pyongyang “routinely makes provocative statements about conducting preemptive nuclear strikes despite efforts by South Korea and the international community toward powerful sanctions.”

Seoul and Beijing clashing over question of enforcing N. Korea sanctions
