Fewer Men Smoke

Smoking declined to less than 40 percent of the adultmale population for the first time last year. The rate has roughly halved since1980, when it was nearly 80 percent. The Ministry of Health and Welfare onTuesday said the smoking rate among men was 39.3 percent in 2015.

The full textof a business summation report from North Korea‘s seventh Korean Workers’ Party(KWP) congress was published on May 9 in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper.In it,North Korea states its plans to “permanently adopt a strategic two-track courseof building of the economy and nuclear capabilities and further strengthendefensive nuclear arms,” as per the policy course stated by leader Kim Jong-unin his congress decision statement from a meeting during the congress’s thirdday on May 8.

Atparty congress, Kim Jong-un named Workers’ Party Chairman

Kim Jong-unwas elected chairman of the Korean Workers‘ Party (KWP) during its seventhcongress on May 9, Japan’s NHK network reported from Pyongyang. The fact wasannounced that day by the congress‘s chairman, Supreme People’s Assemblypresidium president Kim Yong-nam, at a conference hall where members of theforeign press were granted access, the network said.

NorthKorea gives BBC reporter the boot for “distorted” reporting

On May 9,North Korea expelled a BBC correspondent for what it claimed were distorted andfabricated reports about the situation in the North, but it did not go intodetails about what reports were at issue. There is speculation that anunflattering description of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un contained in areport that the correspondent, named Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, made fromPyongyang on Apr. 29 was probably what bothered North Korea.

Questionshovering over Blue House’s claimed deals with Iran

The initialstory that President Park Geun-hye told about construction projects she claimedas the accomplishments of her summit with Iran is being called into questionfollowing the news that MOUs (memoranda of understanding) have not been signedfor some of them and that others may ultimately be awarded to Iraniancompanies. This is likely to lead to further criticism that the Blue Houseinflated its claims of economic deals worth US$37.1 billion.

KaesongComplex tenant companies file Constitutional Court petition over closure

On May 9,Kaesong Industrial Complex tenant companies asked the Constitutional Court toreview the government’s decision to shut down the complex.
