Family background of Secretary General Ban:

The family background of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations has become a target of attention in various segments of society in Korea as well as at the international community?as the outlook of Ban’s possible becoming a formidable contender for Cheong Wa Dae looms larger.

Against this backdrop, The Korea Post media have been receiving requests for information on the family background of Secretary General Ban.

Here are the details of the published information we have on hand concerning the family of Ban:

Ban met Madam Yoo Soon-taek in 1962 when they were both in high school.

Ban married Ms. Yoo in 1971.

They have three adult children: two daughters and one son.

The eldest daughter, Seon-yong, was born in 1972, and now works for the Korea Foundation in Seoul.

His first son Woo-hyun was born in 1974 in India. He received an MBA from Anderson School of Management at University of California, Los Angeles, and works for an investment firm in New York.

His younger daughter, Hyun-hee (born in 1976), is a field officer for UNICEF in Nairobi. She married an Indian man named Siddarth Chatterjee in August 2006, who works at the UNIEF handling Somalia.
