The government, Cheong Wa Dae, and the ruling party helda meeting of senior officials and decided to declare Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-doas a special disaster area due to damages from the latest earthquake. This willallow the central government to share the costs to restore the area, andprovide tax exemptions and reduce public utility bills, such as electricity andgas, for the residents in the disaster area. However, the government should notthink the situation is over just by declaring the special disaster area andannouncing a few response measures.

The international community has embarked on humanitarianassistance for North Korea, which has suffered hundreds of casualties anddamages to its infrastructure due to a flood that occurred in the NorthHamgyong Province.
