Public interest in strengthening the immune system has recently been increasing amid growing concerns over harmful external environments, including the novel coronavirus (officially named as COVID-19) and find dust unrelenting even in the cold weather. In particular, COVID-19 can develop respiratory symptoms such as coughing, fever and phlegm, and those with weak immune system can become more vulnerable to viral diseases. Accordingly, the food and beverage industry has been launching a series of anti-pollution products that use soybean, green tea, and bellflower roots as main ingredients to help strengthen the immunity of the respiratory system and boost anti-viral effects.

According to a study published by the Journal of Nutrition Biochemistry, an SCI-grade scientific journal, soybeans contain not only genistein, which is known to inhibit viral infection and proliferation, but saponin known to be good for improving the immunity, which helps you stay healthy even in the cold weather. Particularly, Dr. Chung’s Food’s ‘Vegemil A’ and ‘Vegemil B’ are products that use soy milk extract manufactured by grinding real soy beans to maximize the fresh taste of soy beans. One bottle of Vegemil contains three essential nutrients as well as vitamins, calcium, phosphorous and zinc, providing well-balanced nutrients. The Vegemil brand is made up of a total of 40 different types of products, including plain and savory ‘Vegemil A’ and sweet ‘Vegemil B’, and other beverages which taste black beans, almonds and walnuts, yogurts and peach, offering a wide range of options consumers can choose from according to their tastes and preferences.

Starbucks Coffee Korea has newly released three beverages that use strawberries shipped directly from farmers every day. Strawberries are known to help improve respiratory immunity as they are rich in quercetin, which prevents viral infections and exerts antioxidants. The three newly released products, named ‘Lovely Strawberry Latte’, ‘Sweet Strawberry Chocolate Cream Frappucino’, and ‘Romantic Strawberry Tea’, are characterized by their fresh taste because the ingredients, which are the best quality of Seolhyang strawberries, are delivered to the stores early in the morning after harvest directly from their origins, Nonsan City, South Chungcheong Province, and Sancheong County, South Gyeongsang Province.

Haitai htb, an affiliate of LG Household & Health Care, has launched a premium tea brand ‘Mokpyeongak Pear & Bellflower Root Tea’, combining beneficial properties of pears and bellflower roots that look after the throat. Pear’s luteolin and saponin are known to be good for preventing respiratory diseases such as coughing, asthma and bronchitis, and pear’s peels, rich in flavonoid and polyphenol, are known to act as antioxidants and anti-viral agents. Developed through a technology partnership with Pyun-kang Oriental Hospital, this product “kills two birds with one stone,” captivating the taste buds of consumers by blending the bellflower roots’ bitter taste and the pear extracts’ sweet one to achieve an optimum balance and improving their health.

Products using ingredients to help release harmful substances absorbed into the body such as fine dust, etc. have been launched. Dongwon F&B has launched two ‘Boseong Latte’ brands, which add the best quality of domestic milk into the ‘Boseong Green Tea’. Green tea is popularly known to be rich in catechin which promotes strong anticancer and antioxidant effects, and tannin known to be good for the removal of metallic toxic substances from the body. Produced in collaboration with Boseong County, a green tea capital of South Korea, this product is manufactured by grinding high qualities of selected organic tea leaves and those leaves can be seen sink to the bottom after some time. With no heat-treatment for sterilization in the manufacturing process, it allows consumers to feel the flavor and aroma inherent in green tea while the ingredients’ nutrients remain intact as much as possible.

Emart24 has released two ‘Smoothie King Kombucha’ brands that help detoxication and whose ingredients act as antioxidants. Kombucha is a health drink made by fermenting black tea or green tea with raw sugar from organic sugarcane, and is known to be good for detox and anti-oxidation because probiotics that help produce intestinal beneficial bacteria are produced during fermentation. This product features the freshness and sweetness of carbonic acid which is naturally produced, not artificial carbonic acid, during the fermentation of organic natural ingredients such as black tea, green tea and raw sugar of sugarcane, and fruit extracts instead of synthetic flavors or sweeteners.
