Guatemalan Ambassador to Korea Marco Tulio Chicas Sosa met with Pocheon City Mayor Park Yoon-guk to increase cooperation and promote exchanges between local governments of the two countries on December 8.

Ambassador Marco Tulio Chicas Sosa introduced Guatemala as a "young country." The Guatemalan government, which was newly launched earlier this year, announced the intention of the joint growth through active exchanges with the Korean central government and local governments such as Pocheon City, with the aim of "innovation" in state affairs.

"Congratulations on the registration of the Hantan River in Pocheon on the UNESCO World Geopark," the ambassador, who served as Guatemala's representative at UNESCO, said, adding, "Guatemala and Pocheon are on the other side of the globe, but we don't feel any distance. We hope that in the future, we will actively engage in bilateral exchanges to develop a cooperative partnership."

Pocheon City Mayor Park Yoon-guk said, "Guatemala is the fourth largest country in the South American continent where overseas Koreans are living and the first in the Central American country," adding, "We hope to achieve mutual growth and development by expanding opportunities for cooperation, including exchanges with businessmen in Pocheon City, as well as promoting Hallyu culture and taekwondo exchanges between the two countries."
