Speaker Chung goes to Indonesia to promote parliamentary friendship

Speaker Chung Sye-kyun of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (south) will head to Indonesia on Wednesday in an effort to expand Korea’s parliamentary-level diplomacy.

Chung will meet with his Indonesian counterparts from the People's Representative Council and the Regional Representatives Council to discuss expanding the two countries' relations.

Chung is expected to urge Indonesia's support for South Korea's efforts to discourage Pyongyang's nuclear development and South Korean companies operating in the Southeast Asian country.

Chung will then fly to Fiji to participate in the 25th Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), where he will share ideas on tackling North Korean nuclear development.

The speaker plans to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from member countries, discussing expanding cooperation on economic ties.

Around 200 representatives from 19 countries will join the APPF gathering, which is aimed at promoting peace and democracy across the region.

Korea 'Begged Off Submarine Drill with Japan, U.S.'

Korea recently turned down proposals for a joint submarine hunting drill with the U.S. and Japan due to anti-Japanese sentiment here, the Asahi Shimbun reported Tuesday.

The daily said the U.S. and Japan proposed the drill in trilateral defense talks in Seoul on Dec. 16 to build a new defense cooperation system based on an intelligence-sharing pact Seoul and Tokyo signed last year.

Workers to Get Extra Days Off in Early May

Kim Jeong-ju’s marriage did not go smoothly. The reason was that Kim, now an 85-year-old resident of Seoul’s Songpa district, traveled to Japan as part of the Korean Women’s Volunteer Labour Corps during the Japanese occupation. Facing a labor shortage after its war of aggression, the Japanese empire mobilized Kim and other teenage girls to serve in the Corps, where they were taken off and put to work in Japanese munitions plants. The “volunteer” part of the corps’s name followed Kim around like a scarlet letter. This was also the term Japan had used to describe the “comfort women” mobilized as sexual slaves to its military.

Buddhist monk passes away in hospital two days after self-immolation

A Buddhist monk named Jeongwon (born Seo Yong-won, 64) who self-immolated during the candlelight rally last weekend to demand the resignation of President Park Geun-hye passed away two days later.On the evening of Jan. 9, Seoul National University Hospital announced that Jeongwon monk, who was hospitalized there, had died at 7:40 pm. The cause of death was multiple organ failure resulting from his burns.

A large cargo ship collided with a small fishing boat Tuesday off South Korea's southeast coast, leaving two fishermen dead and four others missing.

The 74-ton fishing boat with seven people aboard collided with the 23,000-ton bulk carrier, Inspiration Lake, in waters off the southeastern port city of Pohang, coastguard authorities said.
