Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun said on Sept. 7, “We will achieve a hydrogen society in which hydrogen energy can be used by anyone, everything, and anywhere by 2040.”
It is an official declaration that 2040 will be the first year of the popularization of hydrogen. There is an observation that Hyundai Motor Group's hydrogen move will be more aggressive.
Chairman Chung unveiled the group's hydrogen business vision and world-class hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen mobility plans at the “Hydrogen Wave” global online event on the same day.
He emphasized, “It is impossible to respond to climate change without hydrogen energy. The transition to a hydrogen society is not something that individual companies can do, but Hyundai Motor Group has decided that it can no longer watch it.”
Chairman Chung also disclosed a detailed plan to achieve the popularization of hydrogen energy.
Under the plan, new commercial vehicle models will be released only with hydrogen electric vehicles and electric vehicles, and the third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system will be released in 2023.
Seven affiliates of the group, including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Rotem, and Hyundai Steel, unveiled for the first time seven types of hydrogen-related products to be developed.
Autonomous driving unmanned transportation mobility ‘trailer drone’ powered by hydrogen, high-performance hydrogen-fueled sports car, and mobile hydrogen charging station are representative examples.
Chairman Chung announced the group's "Hydrogen Vision 2040" and answered reporters' questions.
An official from the group explained, “Chairman Chung personally revealed his future strategy and participated in Q&A, showing his will to make hydrogen a key future business.”
Hyundai Motor Group is more aggressive in responding to climate change than other domestic and foreign companies.
Hyundai Motor Company announced on Sept. 6 that it will achieve carbon neutrality in all stages of automobile production, operation and disposal by 2045.
On Sept. 2, Hyundai Motor declared the end of internal combustion engine vehicles by announcing that it would release only hydrogen electric vehicles and electric vehicles for Genesis from 2025. Its step is 5-10 years earlier than other global companies such as Mercedes-Benz.
