SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will host an annual meeting of economic and trade ministers from Asian and European Union nations in September, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Wednesday.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) economic ministers' meeting will be held on Sept. 21-22 in Seoul, the ministry said in a statement.

The ASEM economic ministers' meeting was last held in 2005 and has been suspended due to friction among some member states.

The fragile recovery of the global economy is facing turbulent times amid the Trump administration's protectionist moves and Britain's exit from the European Union.

Cooperation between Asia and Europe has become more important because of growing uncertainties in global trade landscape, the ministry said.

The September meeting is expected to discuss measures to prevent protectionism from spreading and boost investment among the member states, it said.
