SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- SK Telecom Co.'s smartwatch authentication for online services has been certified by a major international certification alliance to help reduce reliance on passwords, the company announced Wednesday.
The new system certified by Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) allows online users only to tap the screen of the registered smartwatch without using a USB or one-time password to carry out financial transactions or other online services, South Korea's largest mobile carrier said in a statement.
"We've enhanced the security of the system by encrypting smartwatches and servers and providing a 'kill switch' invalidating the authentication system remotely if the smartwatch should be lost," the mobile carrier said. "We are going to complete the development of B2B solutions for online financial services, portals and apps."

SK Telecom won FIDO certification last year for its biometric authentication technology.
"We are pleased to provide a variety of authentication systems by securing the technology for authentication using smartwatches as well as biometric authentication," Park Jin-hyo, an SK Telecom official, said.
