President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol visited POSCO's Gwangyang Steel Mill on April 21. Yoon had tea time with POSCO Group Chairman Choi Jung-woo, POSCO Vice Chairman Kim Hak-dong and Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok, while visiting Gwangyang 1 furnace to encourage employees.
POSCO Chairman Choi said, “POSCO has been named the "world's most competitive steelmaker" for the 12th consecutive year and is recognized as a global steelmaker by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the first time in Korea as a "lighthouse factory" leading the future of global manufacturing.
“In particular, this year, POSCO switched to a holding company system to expand future business discovery and balanced growth at the group level."
Choi continued to say, "In the future, POSCO Group will expand its business to not only steel but also secondary battery materials, lithium, nickel and hydrogen to become a representative of eco-friendly future materials and ultimately contribute to Korea's economic leap forward."
Gwangyang Steel Mill is the world's largest single steel mill and aims to become the "Global No. 1 Automotive Steel Plate Specialized Steel Mill" based on the world's best automobile steel plate technology.
Gwangyang Steel Mill produced about 8.2 million tons of automotive steel sheets last year. Considering that global car sales are around 80 million units a year, steel plate produced by POSCO was used for one car out of 10 cars.
