Launching eco-friendly product brand, ‘CYCLUS’

SK Geocentric participated in the Global Plastics Expo held in Germany and introduced the world's first 'waste plastic recycling cluster' which is being built with the goal of completion in 2025. SK Geocentric also unveiled a newly created eco-friendly product integrated brand.

SK Geocentric announced that it participated in 'K 2022,' the world's largest plastic and rubber industry fair,’ held in Dusseldorf, Germany. from the 19th to the 26th. This fair is held once in every three years in Germany and is considered one of the world's top three plastics exhibitions.

SK Geocentric introduced the contents related to the recycling cluster to be established in Ulsan to global customers and visitors through touch screen contents. SK Geocentric is building a comprehensive complex that can utilize the three major plastic chemical recycling technologies in one place for the first time in the world.

This complex has technology that extracts high-purity polypropylene (PP) by dissolving waste plastics in a solvent, depolymerization technology that disassembles polymerized polyester (PET) polymers and returns them as raw materials, and chemical decomposition by thermal decomposition of waste plastics. By collecting fuel conversion technology in Ulsan, it can process about 250,000 tons of waste plastic per year when completed.

In the exhibition hall, recycled plastic materials applied with technology of Pure Cycle Technologies of the United States and LOOP Industries of Canada, which formed a strategic cooperative relationship with SK Geocentric to build a cluster, were displayed.

Also displayed commercialized products such as L'Occitane shampoo bottle and Evian water bottle made from recycled plastic.

SK Geocentric also introduced its ESG brand and eco-friendly integrated product brand ‘CYCLUS’ for the first time through this Expo. Cyclus is a Latin word that means 'cycle' and contains the meaning of 'CYCLE + US. (‘Earth’ and ‘Us’ in the Korean phonetic has the same sound.)

The Earth shape of the Cyclus brand means three categories. This exhibition was also applied and composed of three themes. The three themes are ‘Plastic recycling products (Recycle)’, ‘Biodegradable materials (Bio)’, ‘Functional materials (Technique)’.

In particular, in the exhibition space for functional materials, due to the high technological barriers, 3~4 major global chemical companies including SK Geocentric are using Ethylene Acrylic Acid (EAA), a high value-added chemical material that accounts for more than 80% of the global supply. introduced to the core.

The EAA-coated paper cup, introduced by SK Geocentric this time, uses about a third of the amount of plastic that goes into the coating compared to the current general paper cup that is coated with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This can have the effect of reducing the amount of plastic used.

SK geocentric also introduced functional eco-friendly materials such as ethylene acrylate-based copolymers (additives that minimize deterioration in physical properties when recycling plastics), which are expected to increase demand along with the growth of the recycled plastics market.

SK Geocentric also conducted activities such as screening promotional videos on the screen of the exhibition hall and distributing brochures to support the bid for the 2030 Busan Expo. As it is a place where visitors from all over the world gather, it is considered an opportunity to publicize the Busan Expo.
