Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it opened a research lab for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies at Canada-based University of Montreal last month, tapping deeper into an area which has emerged as a main area of focus for global tech giants.

Samsung Electronics said its researchers will team up with Prof. Yoshua Bengio and other students of the university to study AI technologies.

The team will focus on developing key algorithms for voice and visual recognition, interpretation, self-driving and robot technologies.

Samsung said the lab is expected to help the South Korean tech giant secure a more talented workforce and bolster its AI technology capabilities.

The company has been tapping deeper into the industry, with its smartphones being equipped with its own AI platform, the Bixby.
