A labor union at LG Household & Healthcare said it decided on Friday to end its strike over the salary increase issue on the 52nd day of the walkout.
Around 400 union members have set up tents outside the company's headquarters in downtown Seoul since Sept. 23, following the start of the strike on Sept. 20. The union and the management have held 19 rounds of negotiations during the subsequent period to find a compromise but have not made any progress, officials from the two sides said.
The union said it decided to end the strike, due to its members who expressed difficulties over sustaining their families, but said it will continue to negotiate with the management over the salary increase. The members will go back to work starting Monday, it said.
The union members are mostly workers at the company's main production plant in Cheongju, south of Seoul, and duty-free store personnel. Some 380 of 505 employees at the Cheongju factory are in the union, which has affected the plant's operation, the union side said.
The management is offering a 5.25 percent pay raise, higher than the initially proposed 3.1 percent, but the union is demanding an increase of 13.8 percent. The union insists that what the company is really offering is just a 1 percent rise, since 2.1 percent comes from an automatic yearly increase and 2.15 percent from post-settlement adjustments.
