As high as 530%

Sales of winter goods at local retail channels soared as consumers brace for cold weather, industry officials said on Oct. 16, 2018.

Sales of winter-related goods, such as hot packs and electric mats, at the online shopping platform Tmon from Oct. 1-11 rose 86 percent on-year, according to its operator.

Sales of indoor tents, among others, skyrocketed 530 percent and those of hot packs jumped 362 percent during the cited period, it said.

Department stores also enjoyed a boost in sales thanks to a recent drop in temperature.

Three major department stores in the country -Lotte, Shinsegae and Hyundai- said the revenue from their annual autumn discount events rose more than 10 percent compared with last year on the back of winter clothing sales.

Temperatures fell to their lowest levels so far this fall in many areas of South Korea last week, with the season's first ice and frost observed in northern and eastern regions, according to the national weather agency.(Yonhap)
