A reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan was held on June 19 at the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo. Hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Japan, the event followed a similar ceremony held in Seoul on June 16 organized by the Japanese side. More than 1,000 prominent figures from politics, business, and the cultural sectors of both countries attended the Tokyo event, reaffirming the bilateral friendship.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba participated in the event shortly after concluding his first summit with President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada. In his congratulatory speech, Ishiba said, “We had an in-depth dialogue for the stable development of Korea-Japan relations. I see hope in the natural exchanges among younger generations. Let us move forward toward a better future together.”

From the Korean side, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Joo Ho-young and over 10 members of the Korea-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association were present. The Japanese delegation included several current and former high-ranking officials such as former Prime Ministers Yoshihide Suga and Fumio Kishida, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya.

Korean Ambassador to Japan Park Cheol-hee welcomed guests, stating, “The past 60 years of Korea-Japan relations have been a history of growth, achievement, and success. Both countries must continue working toward a sustainable partnership.” Former Prime Ministers Suga and Kishida also delivered remarks and toasts, stressing the importance of cooperation and expressing hope for the relationship's continued progress.

Deputy Speaker Joo emphasized the importance of sincerity in addressing historical issues, stating, “An honest approach to history and mutual respect are essential for deepening understanding between our two nations.”

Adding symbolic meaning to the occasion, the venue featured a traditional folding screen used during the signing of the 1965 Treaty on Basic Relations between Korea and Japan. Guests also enjoyed tastings of Korean agricultural products and traditional liquors, along with cultural performances including Korean traditional music and a joint youth choir performance, which received an enthusiastic response.

President Lee Jae-myung, who was unable to attend the Seoul ceremony due to his participation in the G7 summit, sent a video message, stating, “Korea and Japan are important partners in addressing global challenges together. I look forward to the development of a stable and future-oriented relationship.”
