On June 23, a commemorative reception was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, celebrating the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence and the 76th anniversary of diplomatic ties with South Korea.

In her toast, Philippine Ambassador to Korea Theresa B. Dizon-De Vega highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two nations. “From the deployment of Filipino troops during the Korean War in defense of democracy to today’s robust exchanges, the Philippines and Korea have walked together as allies in hardship and partners in progress,” she said.

Ambassador Dizon-De Vega also underscored the growing scope of bilateral cooperation. “Through the Korea-Philippines Free Trade Agreement (FTA), we are seeing innovation not only in trade and investment, but also in infrastructure, environmental technologies, and clean energy,” she noted.

She further emphasized enhanced defense collaboration, citing the Philippines’ procurement of naval vessels and fighter jets from Korea. “I had the honor of attending the launching ceremony of the Philippine offshore patrol vessel BRP Rajah Sulayman in Ulsan recently—a strong symbol of our expanding security ties,” she added. The ambassador also pointed to increasing cooperation in maritime governance, safety, and science and technology.

Representing the Korean government, Kim Hee-sang, Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, praised the historical significance of the bilateral relationship. “The Philippines was the first Asian country to send troops during the Korean War and the first ASEAN country to establish diplomatic relations with Korea,” he said. He expressed optimism that the FTA would serve as a solid foundation for future economic cooperation.

Looking ahead, both countries are set to strengthen their coordination on regional peace and economic development, particularly in the lead-up to the 2025 APEC Summit in Korea this October and the Philippines’ chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026.
