The Embassy of Morocco in Seoul hosted a ceremony on July 30 to mark the 26th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, celebrating the national holiday known as Throne Day. Held at the Ambassador Pullman Hotel in Jung-gu, central Seoul, the event brought together key dignitaries, including South Korea’s ambassador for climate change Chung Kee-yong and members of the diplomatic corps, to honor the long-standing friendship and evolving partnership between Korea and Morocco.

Observed annually, Throne Day commemorates the bond between the monarch and the people, reflecting on Morocco’s 1,200-year royal heritage and nearly three decades of reform and progress under King Mohammed VI. In his welcoming remarks, Moroccan Ambassador to Korea Chafik Rachadi highlighted Morocco’s achievements under the king’s leadership: “Morocco has achieved political stability, sustainable growth, and diplomatic success. Our GDP has tripled, and the country is now a continental leader in the automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy sectors.”

Ambassador Chung praised Morocco’s early and enduring ties with Korea, stating, “Morocco was the first African nation to establish diplomatic relations with Korea, and even sent voluntary troops during the Korean War in the 1950s. Our countries have walked together through times of war and peace, and now through industrial and climate transformations.”

Bilateral cooperation is expanding in areas such as green energy, climate response, rail infrastructure, hydrogen, and renewable energy. Earlier this year, Hyundai Rotem signed a $1.5 billion contract to supply double-decker electric trains to Morocco. The two nations are also collaborating on major infrastructure projects ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host.

Ambassador Rachadi noted, “We are more than just partners — we are brother nations, shaping a shared future together.”
