A new chapter has opened for eco-tourism and wellness in central Korea with the official launch of the National Geumsan Forest Recreation Area in Geumsan County, South Chungcheong Province.

On September 3, the Korea Forest Service (KFS) held an opening ceremony at the site, attended by Commissioner Kim In-ho, Geumsan County Mayor Park Beom-in, and local residents. The event marked the beginning of full-scale operations for the facility, which is set to serve as a cornerstone of the region’s forest-based tourism and healing infrastructure.

Construction began in 2021, with ₩12 billion (approx. $90 million) invested over four years. The facility has been designed as a comprehensive forest retreat, offering 13 forest cabins, 10 multi-family lodgings, a visitor information center, and a parking lot with space for 60 vehicles.

Inside, the accommodations are furnished with locally produced wooden furniture, while renewable energy systems—such as pellet boilers, solar-powered street lamps, and modular eco-houses—underscore the project’s commitment to sustainability.

Commissioner Kim emphasized that the new facility is more than just a resting place: “The National Geumsan Forest Recreation Area will be positioned as a central hub for forest leisure and healing services in the region. We will continue to expand similar spaces so more people can recharge and reconnect with nature.”

Experts suggest the recreation area will help diversify Geumsan’s identity, known primarily as Korea’s “ginseng capital,” into a broader tourism brand that combines health, ecology, and culture. It is also expected to boost local employment and attract family and group visitors, enhancing the county’s economy.
