Embassy of Pakistan in Seoul hosts ‘Defence and Martyrs’ Day’ commemoration
Diplomats and Korean military officials attend; Korea-Pakistan economic and defence cooperation highlighted
The Embassy of Pakistan in Seoul held a commemoration for Pakistan’s Defence and Martyrs’ Day at the Defense Convention Center in Yongsan District. The event was attended by diplomats from 11 countries including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Oman, as well as 38 military attachés, Korean military officials, defense industry representatives, and academics.
Observed annually on September 6, Pakistan’s Defence Day commemorates the country’s defense against an invasion during the 1965 war with India and honors the sacrifices of its veterans and martyrs. The event emphasized paying tribute to veterans and reaffirming messages of international solidarity and cooperation.
In his remarks, Syed Moazam Hussain Shah, Pakistan’s Ambassador to South Korea, said, “Despite India’s provocations in 1965, Pakistan was not merely a piece of land but a nation forged through immense sacrifice and struggle. The entire population united as one, transcending religion, ethnicity, and region.” He added, “While we cherish peace, we are fully capable of defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The ambassador also highlighted Korea-Pakistan relations, stating, “Our countries collaborate closely in the fields of economy, defense, and infrastructure development.” He cited projects such as the Lahore-Rawalpindi Motorway and the activities of Korean companies in Pakistan, expressing optimism about the potential signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two nations.
With a population of approximately 240 million, Pakistan is a major South Asian country exploring forward-looking partnerships with Korea in maritime and port development, military, economic, and industrial sectors.
