Talks with PM, Foreign and Interior Ministers focus on joint response to transnational crimes
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Phnom Penh on November 10 to discuss ways to enhance cooperation on protecting Korean nationals and combating transnational crimes such as online scams, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
During the meeting, Minister Cho proposed that the two countries strengthen collaboration through the newly established Korea Task Force to ensure the safety of Korean citizens residing in Cambodia and to respond more effectively to online scams and other cross-border crimes.
Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his agreement, noting that Cambodia has made the eradication of transnational crimes a national priority. He added that the Cambodian government would work closely with South Korea to produce tangible results.
Both sides also agreed to explore ways to further develop their strategic partnership ahead of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, including expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and labor.
Minister Cho also held talks with Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, urging the Cambodian government to take proactive measures to address the involvement of some Koreans in scam-related crimes. Prak Sokhonn affirmed that Cambodia would do its utmost to resolve the issue through continued cooperation.
Later, Minister Cho and Yoo Jae-sung, acting commissioner general of the Korean National Police Agency, met with Interior Minister Sar Sokha to request Cambodia’s cooperation in ensuring that any Koreans apprehended in connection with local crackdowns be promptly secured and swiftly repatriated to Korea.
