The Rural Development Administration (RDA) of South Korea is partnering with Hokkaido University in Japan to advance research on carbon-neutral agricultural technologies.

The collaboration marks a significant step in expanding international scientific cooperation for climate-resilient and sustainable farming.

On November 12, the RDA’s National Institute of Agricultural Sciences visited Hokkaido University’s Graduate School of Agriculture to discuss joint research strategies focused on reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing soil carbon sequestration.

During the meeting, both institutions explored four main areas of cooperation:

▲ Exchange of information on greenhouse gas reduction and climate-resilient farming technologies, ▲ Strengthening research on biochar utilization and carbon-storing cultivation methods, ▲ Expanding joint international research projects and researcher exchanges, and ▲ Establishing a long-term framework for policy-linked collaboration on carbon-neutral agriculture.

The partnership aims to accelerate innovation in sustainable agricultural systems while supporting the global effort to achieve net-zero emissions. Regular researcher exchanges, training programs, and new joint research projects are also planned.

The RDA emphasized that this collaboration will play a pivotal role in enhancing South Korea’s technical capabilities in carbon-neutral agriculture. Technologies such as biochar application, soil carbon enhancement, and eco-friendly fertilizer use are expected to become key tools for improving productivity while strengthening agriculture’s carbon absorption capacity.

Lee Sang-jae, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Environment at RDA, stated, “This cooperation provides a vital platform to expand Korea’s expertise in carbon-neutral agricultural research within the global network. We will continue to lead international efforts to develop greenhouse gas reduction and carbon absorption technologies in the agricultural sector.”
