Korea celebrates the 6th Kimchi Day as the iconic dish rises on the global stage
Exports set to surpass last year’s record as more countries officially recognize Kimchi Day
South Korea marked the sixth annual Kimchi Day on November 21 with a celebratory event at the National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul, highlighting the growing global recognition of the country’s signature fermented dish. Established in 2020 as the first legally designated food-related anniversary in Korea, Kimchi Day underscores the cultural and economic importance of kimchi, both at home and abroad.
This year’s ceremony included an awards presentation for outstanding kimchi producers, special performances commemorating the day, and a large-scale kimjang demonstration held outdoors after the official program. The event offered visitors—both locals and tourists—an immersive experience of traditional kimchi-making, allowing them to witness firsthand how Korea’s centuries-old kimjang culture continues to evolve in a modern context.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, kimchi exports are on track to break last year’s all-time record, driven by robust demand from North America and Europe. Global interest in fermented and health-focused foods has also contributed to kimchi’s rising popularity across diverse international markets.
Kimchi Day has now been officially designated in 16 regions across five countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. What began as a cultural celebration within Korean communities overseas has grown into a worldwide recognition of kimchi’s cultural and culinary value.
Minister Song Mi-ryeong emphasized kimchi’s expanding global influence, stating, “Kimchi has grown from a beloved traditional dish to a global food enjoyed by people around the world. The government will continue to promote the kimchi industry as a future-oriented export sector and strengthen support so that kimchi can become a firmly established global brand.”
As Kimchi Day enters its sixth year, the celebration reflects more than a cultural tradition—it showcases Korea’s confidence in elevating its culinary heritage to international prominence, while nurturing the global reach of one of its most enduring food icons.
