A Texan outsmarted

A Texan, while visiting Toronto, found himself in the back seat of a taxi cab on the way to his hotel. Passing by the Royal York the Texan asked the cab driver "What's that building there?"

"That's the Royal York Hotel" replied the cabbie.

"The Royal York? How long did it take to build that?" asked the Texan.

"About 12 years" replied the cabbie.

"12 years? We build 'em twice as high, twice as wide and four times as long down in Texas, and we do that in six months."

A while later the cab driver makes his way past the Metro-Toronto Convention Centre. "What's that building over there?" asked the Texan.

"That's the Metro-Toronto Convention Centre" replied the cabbie.

"Convention Centre? How long did it take to build that?" asked the Texan.

"About three years" replied the cabbie.

"Three years? We build 'em twice as high, three times as long and four times as wide as that down in Texas, and it only takes us about two weeks."

Shortly thereafter the cabbie drives past the CN Tower. "What's that building there?" asks the Texan, pointing at the tower.

"Damned if I know" replied the cabbie, "It wasn't here when I drove by yesterday."

Amicable Divorce

After three years of separation, the couple finally divorced amicably.

The man wanted to date again and looked in the personals column of the local newspaper.

After reading through all the listings, he circled three that seemed possible in terms of age and interests, but put off calling them.

Two days later, there was a message on his answering machine from his ex-wife: “I came over to your house to borrow some tools today and saw the ads you circled in the paper: Don’t call the one in the second column. Its me.”

[News analysis] Three waves causing South Korean diplomatic stumble

South Korea is stumbling with its diplomacy, buffeted by three major waves: closer collaboration between the US and Japan, attempts by China and Japan to improve their relations, and the ongoing break in inter-Korean ties. One of the major issues is the lack of competence and strategy from the diplomatic leadership, which has so far failed to find a solution to this vexing equation.

[News analysis] In Japan policy, Seoul trying to disentangle history and contemporary issues

South Korea’s relations with Japan are chilly, and its relations with North Korea are at an impasse, and both of these illustrate how the foreign policy of President Park Geun-hye has run aground. More clear evidence is the fact that the leaders of South Korea and Japan haven’t managed to hold a single summit since Park took office in 2013. .

Japanese lawmaker says Abe not echoing pivotal 1993 Kono Statement

A lawmaker from Japan’s chief opposition party said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s remarks after a recent US-Japan summit did not directly echo the message of the 1993 Kono Statement.“I think it is difficult to say that Prime Minister Abe spoke literally in the same tenor as the Kono Statement,” said Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Koichiro Gemba on May 4. .

Demonstrators injured by police water cannon bring case to Constitutional Court Participants in the Sewol and Labor Day demonstrations who suffered lasting physical pain after being hit by police water cannons that were mixed with PAVA (a synthetic capsaicinoid solution) are asking the Constitutional Court to block the arbitrary use of water cannons containing tear gas. They also asked a research institute to analyze the chemical composition of liquid that was collected from the site of the demonstrations. .

South Korea could have third-largest share in AIIB

South Korea will have the third largest share in the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), a Chinese magazine predicted. South Korea will come in third, following China and India, said the China Economic Weekly, the sister magazine of state-run newspaper the People’s Daily, in a May 4 article. The weekly was reporting on its analysis of the share of the 57 countries who have agreed to found the bank, according to their gross domestic product (GDP) in 2013. .

South Korea and Vietnam sign free trade agreement

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MTIE) announced the signing of a free trade agreement with Vietnam on May 5. The agreement was signed in Hanoi by South Korean Minister Yoon Sang-jik and his Vietnamese counterpart, Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang, with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung observing.

[News analysis] South Korean diplomacy accused of being “adrift” without a paddle South Korean diplomacy is under heavy fire for being “adrift” and lacking bearings. Some lawmakers are even calling for the resignation of its chief representative, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yun Byung-se.But with the Ministry continuing to maintain that nothing is amiss, a shift in policy continues to look unlikely. Its defense of its current diplomatic strategy continues even a US visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last week that seems to bear out fears about a new honeymoon between Washington and Tokyo leaving Seoul out in the cold.
