KEPCO said on Dec. 8 that UAE Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 has reached 100 percent of its output on Dec. 7, 2020 and is set to operate commercial operation next year.

Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 has been conducting power-up tests by gradually increasing the reactor power since its initial criticality was achieved on July 31.

“It is currently in the process of conducting tests on plant control and safety systems at 100% reactor power status and checking whether it meets UAE regulatory requirements and world-class safety and quality standards,” a KEPCO spokesman said.

Once all the tests at 100% power are completed, Baraka Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 will shut down the reactor and begin simple maintenance to comprehensively reflect the improvements in operation of the plant during the start-up period.

After the performance guarantee test, it will start commercial operation in 2021, KEPCO said.

KEPCO and Team Korea plan to successfully complete the Barakah nuclear power plant project with all their capabilities.

“The UAE's peaceful nuclear energy development will serve as a foundation for strengthening cooperation throughout the entire nuclear power plant cycle, including construction, operation, design, nuclear fuel and maintenance between Korea and the UAE,” the spokesman said.
