Park Soo-hyun, senior presidential secretary for public communication, said in a written briefing on the day, "President Moon spoke to the new PPP leader Lee Joon-seok at around 1:20 p.m. to congratulate him."

According to Park, President Moon said, "You did a very big job. It's great. It's what has left for a long time in our political history.

"I think it is a sign of change in our country as well as politics," he said. "I hope the Lee-led People Power Party will cooperate with the government as the COVID-19 crisis continues even if confrontation is inevitable at the party level or politics in the National Assembly building in Yeouido, Seoul."

It is the first time that a leader in his 30s like Lee has been elected from the ruling party or the main opposition party.
