Former Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae officially declared her candidacy for the Presidential election on June 23, saying, "The Democratic Party of Korea should return to the candlelight spirit."
Choo held a press conference to run for President in Heyri, Paju, Gyeonggi Province, later in the day and said she would create a "country where people are highly revered and respected.”

"I declare my candidacy for the 20th Presidential election in Heiri, Paju, on the way to peace and unification," Choo said. "The next government should actively and independently establish a peace regime and prepare for future unification."
Noting that we need to establish a more creative and future-oriented peace strategy on the Korean Peninsula that guarantees a rich future for South Korea’s youth generation and North Korea's new generation, she said. "I will become a unified President who revives the embers of peace on the Korean Peninsula and designs the future of unified Korea."
