SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- Rep. Yoo Seong-min, a potential presidential candidate from the splinter Bareun Party, described himself as "the only economic expert" among contenders on Wednesday, expressing confidence in his expertise with regard to the economy compared to rivals.

"There are many presidential candidates, but I am the only economist," Yoo said.

Yoo plans to officially announce his presidential bid on Thursday.

"If we hold an early presidential election after the Constitutional Court approves the impeachment (of President Park Geun-hye), the new president must begin the duty without a transition period," Yoo said, claiming the new leader must take care of the economy and national security at the same time.

Yoo, who holds a doctorate in economy, said he has also worked for the parliament's defense and diplomacy committees.

Reflecting his conservative stance, Yoo emphasized the Seoul-Washington alliance will be even more important under U.S. President Donald Trump.

"North Korea's nuke and missile threats are more serious than ever. China is boasting its power not only in the military sphere, but in economics areas as well," Yoo said. "Japan's rightward shift is also worrisome."

Accordingly, Yoo said the Seoul-Washington alliance serves as the foundation for dealing effectively with security challenges.
