This year marks the 60th anniv. of diplomatic ties between Korea and 15 Latin American countries

Han Byung-gil, former Korean ambassador to Argentina, was appointed as the new chairman of the Korean Council on Latin America & the Caribbean at the council’s regular general meeting on May 3.

Han served as the foreign ministry's director general for Latin America, ambassador to Peru and ambassador to Argentina. The Korean Council on Latin America & the Caribbean was founded in 1996 and is working to promote mutual exchanges and cooperation between Korea and Latin American countries.

Latin America is an emerging market, accounting for a high proportion of the global economy, and serves as a technical cooperation partner with Korea along with the supply of raw materials to Korea.

"This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and 15 Latin American countries," said an official from the council. "We are planning various activities of the association in line with the inauguration of the new chairman."
