LS Cable is spurring expansion of renewable energy-related businesses with its subsidiaries. LS Materials announced on Oct. 5 that it will supply Ultra Capacitor (UC) to NextEra Energy, the largest renewable energy operator in the United States.
UC is an industrial special battery with high speed charging and discharging and long lifespan. It is mainly used for wind turbines, UPS (uninterruptible power supply), factory automation, unmanned transport robots (AGV), and electric vehicles.
UC plays a role in connecting power with instantaneously high output in the crisis of power break. The charging and discharging time is only about 1/10th of the lead storage batteries currently used.
In addition, the number of charge and discharge of UC is more than 1,000 times higher than that of lead storage batteries.
In the meantime, the battery for wind turbines had to be replaced every two or three years, but it can be used for more than 15 years by applying UC.
The company said that the UC's application area is expanding and the market is growing rapidly due to the spread of electric cars and wind power industries worldwide.
“UC has a lot of applications because it can compensate for the shortcomings of existing rechargeable batteries,” said Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Materials. “Especially, if the use of electric vehicle parts such as emergency power and output auxiliary devices is generalized, the size of the UC market around the world will be trillions of won.”
