A former financial team leader accused of embezzling 221.5 billion won

A former financial team leader who was put on trial for embezzling 221.5 billion won while working at Osstem Implant was sentenced to 35 years in prison and a fine of 30 million won.

The Seoul Southern District Court's Criminal Settlement Division sentenced a 46-year-old man accused of embezzlement and violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes to this and ordered to collect 115.1 billion won from him.

His wife, identified only by her surname Park, was also sentenced to three years in prison for violating the Crime Profit Concealment Regulation Act. The sister-in-law and sister were sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation, respectively, on the same charges.

The court found all of Lee's charges guilty and said, "The crime is bad because the crime is done boldly over a long period of time."

The prosecution demanded life imprisonment for Lee last month, saying, "This is the largest amount of damage since the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes was applied."

The prosecution emphasized, "The number of cases of embezzling company money in tens of billions of won has increased, and the biggest crime, this case, should be punished severely so that such a case will never happen to Korea again."
