Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. on Friday showcased their latest achievements in the field of 8K TVs and built-in home appliances, reflecting their commitment to penetrate deeper into top-of-the-line luxury products.

For this year's Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) Berlin, which runs through next Wednesday, Samsung Electronics focused on promoting its new QLED 8K TV.

Samsung introduced the 85-inch QLED 8K TV at the venue, the demand for bigger screens has been increasing around the globe.

The company said it is seeking to deliver premium products equipped with artificial intelligence features with improved resolution.

The 8K indicates the screen has a resolution of 7,680×4,320 or some 33 million pixels overall. It vastly exceeds 4K, also referred to as Ultra HD, which boasts a resolution of 3,840×2,160 and around 8 million pixels.

LG Electronics also unveiled its 88-inch 8K OLED TV at the exhibition.

The smaller rival of Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, put more emphasis on built-in kitchen appliances at the IFA, launching the Signature Kitchen Suite brand in Europe.

Industry sources said LG spent 4 billion won (US$3.59 million) to build an outdoor exhibition booth to promote the built-in products.

Song Dae-hyun, who heads LG's home appliance business, said such efforts to promote high-end appliances will spark a trickle-down effect, helping the company expand sales of general products as well.

Samsung Electronics likewise promoted its premium built-in products at the IFA.

"It is not an exaggeration to say that if we do not succeed in the built-in market in the U.S. and Europe, we cannot succeed in the home appliances business," Samsung Electronics President Kim Hyun-suk, who heads the consumer electronics business, told reporters in Berlin. (yonhap)
