Gyeonggi Province announced on November 2 that the cities of Pyeongtaek and Bucheon have been selected as outstanding cases in the 2025 Green City Best Practices Contest hosted by the Korea Forest Service.

The annual contest aims to discover exemplary urban greening and climate adaptation projects in five categories: ▲Climate-Responsive Urban Forests ▲Urban Forests ▲Street Trees ▲School Forests ▲School Forest Utilization and Maintenance. Gyeonggi Province has produced award-winning cities for four consecutive years since 2022.

In the Street Trees category, Pyeongtaek City received high marks for creating the National Route 1 Green Tunnel, a 14.5-kilometer stretch from Bijeon-dong to Dogok-dong lined with pine trees—the city’s official tree and a native species.

Bucheon City was recognized in the School Forest Utilization and Maintenance category for its Sion High School Forest, which serves both as an ecological learning space and a green rest area for local residents. The school also operates ecological experience programs integrated with its curriculum.

Gyeonggi Province added that it invested 30 billion won (approx. 22 million USD) this year to expand its green infrastructure—building 24 green streets, 42 pocket parks, and 16 school forests, while also maintaining and remodeling 32 urban forest trails at 220 locations across the province.
