After inter-Korean agreement, is a summit possible?

Experts advise incremental steps of lower-level meeting to build for a potential summit between leaders

The dramatic shift from military tensions to calls for exchange and cooperation at recent high-level “two-plus-two” talks between South and North Korea is raising hopes for a possible summit between leaders. The question of whether such a development could be tied to agreed-upon meetings between governments is drawing particular attention.

South and North follow through with measures to bring down military tensions

South and North Korea honored their agreement at high-level talks this week by respectively ending loudspeaker broadcasts and calling off a “quasi-state of war” as of noon on Aug. 25.The measures were the first taken by the two sides to reduce military tensions that had been spiraling toward crisis in recent weeks. .

China announces Pres. Park will attend Sep. 3 military review in Beijing

On Aug. 25, the Chinese government announced that South Korean President Park Geun-hye will be attending a military review held in Beijing on Sep. 3 marking the 70th anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will not be attending the military review, with KWP Secretary Choe Ryong-hae going in his place. .

South and North reach deal to end prolonged period of tensions

After four days of “two-plus-two” talks between high-ranking officials from North and South Korea, the two sides reached a dramatic agreement in which North Korea expressed regret for a landmine explosion in the DMZ and for firing artillery shells and South Korea will stop broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda over loudspeakers on the border. .

Could joint statement pave the way for improved inter-Korean relations?

Four sleepless days of inter-Korean negotiations ended with North Korea agreeing to express “regret” for a land mine explosion that injured two soldiers earlier this month and South Korea agreeing to halt its propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts. .

43-hour negotiations an endurance test for elderly delegates

The high-level inter-Korean negotiations that concluded on Aug. 25 set a record for length at an unprecedented 43 hours since beginning on Aug. 22. While the Blue House remained on all-night emergency standby for three straight days, the overall mood in response to the dramatic last-minute deal was one of jubilation.
