[Analysis] At sixth summit, S. Korea and China ward off tensions on the peninsula

President Park is apparently pushing for a trilateral summit with China and Japan, without no apparent enthusiasm from Beijing

During a summit at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sep. 2, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that they oppose any activity that causes tensions on the Korean peninsula. This is being taken to mean opposition to a show of force by North Korea that could occur on Oct. 10, the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean Workers’ Party.

North Korea tells South that “regret” doesn‘t amount to “apology”

On Sep. 2, North Korea warned the South to “refrain from any words or actions that would ruin the mood for improving inter-Korean relations.” It also stated that the expression of “regret” included in the joint statement produced by the “two-plus-two” meeting of high-level officials between Aug. 22 and Aug. 24 was “not an apology.” .

History educators come out en masse against single state-designated textbook

September 2 was a monumental day for opposition to the Park Geun-hye administration’s ideas for state designation of a single Korean history textbook. An opposing statement of opinion was delivered to the Ministry of Education with signatures from 34 of the 44 professors (77%) in Seoul National University’s five history-related departments, while another declaration of opposition was presented with the names of 2,255 history teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools around the country. .

Even considering socioeconomic differences, S. Korea’s social spending at OECD bottom

South Korea‘s social service expenditures rank at the bottom among OECD member countries even when social and economic differences in gross domestic product, elderly population, and government debt are taken into account, a report shows. .

In OECD, S. Korea’s tax revenue elasticity lagging behind other major economies

South Korea’s tax revenue elasticity ranks at the bottom among OECD countries, a study shows. Tax revenue elasticity is a value that represents the natural increase in revenues from the nominal economic growth rate, showing the percentage increase in revenue for each percentage-point rise in nominal gross domestic product (GDP). A lower level means that the rate of tax revenue increase is not keeping pace with the nominal economic growth rate. .

Beijing military parade a barometer for cooling China-N. Korea relations

A military parade in Beijing on Sept. 3 to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of China’s victory over Japan and fascism in the Second World War is shaping into a test of the future direction for North Korea and China’s cooling relations.
