Scholars and government officials of ASEAN and Korea to gather for "2023 ASEAN-Korea Forum"

- ASEAN-Korea Centre and Institute for East Asian Studies of Sogang University to co-organize the "2023 ASEAN-Korea Forum" at Mattheo Hall, Sogang University at 13:30(KST), 31 October -

The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Hae-yong) will organize the ‘2023 ASEAN-Korea Forum’ at Reception Room, Mattheo Hall of Sogang University on 31 October 2023. Held under the theme “Elevating ASEAN-Korea Strategic Partnership in a Changing Global Landscape,” renowned scholars and government officials will discuss the strategic partnership between ASEAN and Korea from diverse perspectives as both regions look forward to marking the 35th Anniversary of ASEAN-Korea Dialogue Partnership in 2024. The Forum is co-organized with the Institute for East Asian Studies of Sogang University (SIEAS).

Opening remarks by the Secretary General Kim Hae-yong of ASEAN-Korea Centre and Congratulatory Remarks by President Sim Jong-hyeok of Sogang University, as well as the Keynote Speech by Dr. Hassan Wirajuda, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia and current Dean of School of Law and International Studies at Prasetiya Mulya University will take place during the Opening Ceremony. In particular, the Keynote Speech is expected to share insightful views on the ASEAN-Korea relations, based on the speaker’s prior experience and knowledge on the matter. Session 1 will invite Ambassador Lim Sung-nam, former First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of ROK and former Ambassador of ROK to ASEAN, Ambassador

Nguyen Vu Tung of Vietnam, and Professor Shin Yoon-hwan of Sogang University to examine the status and future of ASEAN-Korea strategic partnership from a policy perspective. Scholars from both ASEAN and Korea as well as Director for ASEAN External Cooperation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia will present and discuss on the issues and challenges in the future of the partnership in Session 2. In Session 3, the Awarding Ceremony for the ‘2023 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest’ organized by the Centre will take place. Winners of the Contest will also present their essays and share the youths’ perspectives on ASEAN-Korea partnership as future players of ASEAN-Korea relations.

Secretary General Kim Hae-yong of ASEAN-Korea Centre commented that “the year 2024 is a significant milestone being the 35th Anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-Korea Dialogue Partnership, and both sides have agreed on elevating the partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) next year during the 24th ASEAN-ROK Summit. I hope the ASEAN-Korea Forum can provide a chance for the exchange of opinions and view among experts on maintaining a comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and Korea.”
