    - Supporting the co-operative movement to drive sustainable and transformative economic change in Africa

    - MG pledges to continue its support and efforts for the prosperity of African communities

The Korea Foundation for Saver's Credit Union (KFC) announced that it successfully held the 'Cooperatives for Sustainable Change in Africa Workshop' in Nairobi, Kenya from 4-6 December. The workshop was organised in collaboration with the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the University of Leuven, Belgium, with the aim of supporting the cooperative movement, which will play a key role in Africa's transition to a sustainable and transformative economy. 

The workshop was attended by more than 50 co-operative leaders and policy makers, including co-operative experts from 18 African countries*. They exchanged knowledge and shared their visions on the importance of co-operatives in supporting communities, as well as the role of co-operatives in various sectors.

18 African countries: Algeria, Botswana, DRC, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Togo, Zambia, Senegal, Cape Verde, Uganda, Ghana, and Sudan.

In particular, the presentation of the Saemaul model and best practices for expanding financial inclusion in rural Uganda received great attention from the participants. The presentation of the Korean government's digital policy direction to Africa also helped to raise the profile of Korea. 

During the welcome ceremony, Simon Chelugui, Kenya's Minister of Cooperative and MSMEs Development, presented a blueprint for the future of co-operatives led by Africa and thanked the Korea Saver's Bank for providing motivation and capacity building opportunities for change. 

"Through this workshop, we have established a common agenda on how co-operatives can bring positive change to communities and countries on the African continent," he said. "We expect co-operatives to play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable change in Africa."
